What is a Virus?

A virus is like a vicious worm that can get into your computer if you let it out by downloading an untrustworthy file, opening a spam email, or clicking a link from somebody you don't know or trust who you might be chatting to.

A virus often can spread by automatically sending itself to all the addresses you have on your computer so you pass it on un-knowingly to your friends and family!

Spam carries a lot of viruses but sometimes a virus will try and trick you into thinking it's from somebody important to get you to open it. If you are unsure of any email, it's best to just delete it.

A virus can sometimes break your computer, or even destroy it, so be very careful.

Always try to keep your anti-virus software up to date. Your parents or carer will know how safe you are. Also if you have some really important files on your computer, such as your homework, make sure you try to make regular copies on a CD or floppy disc!
