What is Premium Rate?

Premium Rate is where a company uses a really expensive phone number that they want you to call so they can charge lots of money to your parent's phone or TV bill, or even take loads of your phone credit!

Premium rate services usually advertise mobile ringtones and jokes, competitions and TV voting, but some DON'T warn you when you're about to use them. By keeping in mind that you hardly ever get something for nothing, you are unlikely to be fooled by the scams. However, some false promotions might ask you to text them back rather than call them, perhaps by telling you someone fancies you. By replying to the number, you are likely to be registering with them and they will charge YOU for every message THEY send! These are quite common and often aimed at young people as they send more texts than anyone else.

REMEMBER, if you didn't enter a competition or apply for a ringtone in the first place, it is unlikely you will have won anything from a random text, call or scratch-card that came through he post. The bottom line is they want you to call their premium rate number. DON'T BE FOOLED!
