Kit's Online Gaming Tips

Computer games are great, I'm sure you'd agree, and I love competing with all my friends!

I also discovered I can play with complete strangers over the internet when my friends have become fed up of me beating them, ha-ha! Even when I'm not near my computer, I can play games using my mobile phone or digital TV! I really should get out more!

Anyway, another cool thing about online gaming is that you sometimes get the option to talk to your competitors about the game or even just chat generally, wherever they are in the world!

However, you still have to be very cautious if you are able to use these features, in exactly the same way you would be if you chat to people using instant messaging services or chat rooms.

I ALWAYS use my nickname, Kit, whenever I'm online and NEVER TELL ANYONE my personal information, including my e-mail address, even if they ask for it!

Sometimes it might seem like your new friend has loads in common with you, including age and other general interests, but this may not be the case at all! Be careful who you trust online as these people are still just strangers no matter how friendly they are or how long you've been competing with them! They might not be who they say they are, even when there is a voice chat on the game. Some people can still change their voice using clever computer equipment.

Another useful thing I learned was how to block another gamer when they were behaving badly by asking for my private information and being generally annoying. This was so they couldn't contact me again and I even reported them to the games provider. This also made sure they didn't do the same to anybody else as it wasn't a nice experience! If this happens to you, you can easily do the same or even just kick them out of the game if they are making you feel uneasy. It's also a good idea to learn how to keep a record of what they've said to you if you do need to report the problem.

Finally, it's also important you tell a responsible adult what's going on as they might want to tell the police. This is okay because they have special ways of dealing with this problem as it can be quite common. So stay safe and be SMART!
